Trafficking of all kinds developed during the period of confinement in France, particularly around masks, these objects which highly wanted. The police services have dismantled networks of resale of anti-Covid material and swindles for a total amount equivalent to nearly 30 million euros.
The trafficking of masks began in the second week of confinement, at the end of March, when the question of their scarcity arose. The first report at the end of April: 438,000 masks from illegal circuits had already been seized. These products were often the result of thefts, to the prejudice of the nursing staff.
In other cases, professionals authorized to legally deliver masks, such as certain pharmacists, preferred to divert their merchandise to sell it illegally at higher prices.
Finally, some criminals do not hesitate to pretend to be the owners of mask production companies by offering their services via the Internet. These criminals get orders without actually delivering any masks. As a result, the National Gendarmerie has intervened in more than a hundred cyber scams throughout the containment period.
